Manchester United drew 1-1 at Fulham on 20 September, and afterwards their manager and their goalscorer gave different views of how the second half had gone.
What Cunha said
Matheus Cunha, whose late goal earned the point, said United were not good enough at the start of the second half, with the game goalless. According to The Guardian, he said Fulham "put in more energy than us" at that stage and that United "cannot accept this". Fulham took the lead through a Lisandro Martínez own goal in the 63rd minute.
Carrick's view
Michael Carrick said he did not particularly agree. He said the way United finished the game did not look like a lack of energy to him and that he was pleased with their response to the own goal. He described the display as "a small step" and said the margins so far this season had gone against United, but that he was "not despondent" because he saw good signs.
The week behind them: United had lost the derby against Manchester City and gone out of the League Cup to Brighton, both at Old Trafford.
The Mainoo substitution: some supporters booed when Kobbie Mainoo was replaced by Mason Mount in the 80th minute. Carrick said he understood the reaction while chasing a game and took no offence.
On the mood: asked about a sense of deflation among fans, Carrick said there was frustration but no deflation inside the club, and that it was still "a big season ahead".
