Nine games, nine results: the numbers behind United's five-game winless run

Two wins, three draws and four defeats since 22 August: United's home and away records, goals for and against, and what the nine results say before the trip to Leeds.

Manchester United go into every match with a question hanging over them: how did a team that scored five against Ipswich and four against Sabah FA end up without a win in five? The answer is in nine results between 22 August and 13 October, which we have gone through game by game.

The nine results

  • 22 Aug: Hull City 2-0 Manchester United (Premier League, away)
  • 30 Aug: Manchester United 5-2 Ipswich (Premier League, home)
  • 6 Sep: Everton 2-2 Manchester United (Premier League, away)
  • 10 Sep: Manchester United 4-0 Sabah FA (Champions League, home)
  • 13 Sep: Manchester United 0-1 Manchester City (Premier League, home)
  • 16 Sep: Manchester United 2-3 Brighton (League Cup, home)
  • 20 Sep: Fulham 1-1 Manchester United (Premier League, away)
  • 10 Oct: Manchester United 1-1 Tottenham (Premier League, home)
  • 13 Oct: Atlético Madrid 2-0 Manchester United (Champions League, away)

That is two wins, three draws and four defeats. United have scored 15 goals and conceded 14. The winless run of five games started after the Sabah win on 10 September.

Home and away tell different stories

  • At Old Trafford (5 games): two wins, one draw and two defeats, with 12 goals scored and 7 conceded.
  • Away (4 games): no wins, two draws and two defeats, with 3 goals scored and 7 conceded.

At home United have won by three or more goals twice and lost twice by a single goal, to Manchester City and Brighton. Away they have scored in only two of four matches, and never more than twice.

The Premier League table

After six league games United have six points from one win, three draws and two defeats, with nine goals scored and nine conceded. Manchester City, who beat United at Old Trafford in September, had won all of their first seven.

Three patterns worth noting

  • Late goals matter. Tottenham's equaliser at Old Trafford on 10 October came in the 90th minute, against ten men.
  • The cups have already cost something. The League Cup exit to Brighton, 2-3 at home, took United out of one competition before the end of September.
  • Discipline has crept in. In the last two matches United collected four yellow cards against Tottenham and a red card for Leny Yoro at Atlético Madrid.

What it points to

Nothing on this list says United cannot score. The weak spot is the conceded goals away from home and in the closing minutes, which fits with what the club are said to be planning in defence in the coming transfer windows. Whether the run ends against Leeds on Sunday 18 October is the next test.
