Atlético Madrid 2-0 Man United: an early goal, a red card for Yoro and Lookman seals it

Barrios scored inside a minute and Lookman added a second after Yoro's red card. The line-ups, the VAR calls, the numbers behind the 2-0 and what is next for United.

Manchester United lost 2-0 to Atlético Madrid in the second matchday of the Champions League league phase on Tuesday 13 October, beaten by a goal inside the first minute and a second by substitute Ademola Lookman after United had been reduced to ten men. The defeat left United with three points from two games in Europe, the same as their hosts.

A goal after 60 seconds

Atlético were ahead almost immediately. Pablo Barrios scored in the opening minute, set up by Álex Baena, and United spent the rest of the half chasing the game at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. The home side thought they had a second before half-time, but a VAR check in the 45th minute cancelled a goal for Johnny Cardoso, and it was 1-0 at the break. Diego Simeone was booked for dissent in the 37th minute.

How the teams lined up

Atlético started in a 4-4-2: Oblak; Llorente, Romero, Hancko and Grimaldo; Giuliano Simeone, Barrios, Cardoso and Baena; Lee Kang-in and Julián Álvarez. Michael Carrick used a 4-2-3-1 with Lammens in goal and a back four of Dalot, Yoro, Martínez and Ayden Heaven, who was playing at left-back with Luke Shaw missing from the squad. Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba, two of United's summer signings, started in midfield alongside Fernandes, Tielemans and Rashford, with Mbeumo as the lone forward.

Changes, a VAR decision and the red card

Marcus Rashford was booked in the 52nd minute. Atlético made two changes just after the hour, with Barrios and Lee off for Pubill and Jonathan David. Carrick made his own triple change in the 66th minute: Zirkzee for Tielemans, Mount for Baleba and Amad Diallo for Rashford.

The game turned in the 72nd minute, when a VAR check confirmed a card upgrade for Leny Yoro, and the defender was shown a red card in the 74th minute. Atlético had just brought on Ademola Lookman and Morten Hjulmand (71st), and Lookman scored the second in the 79th minute. Carrick reshaped his side one last time in the 80th minute, replacing Heaven with Maguire and Fernandes with Cunha. Robin Le Normand was booked for Atlético in the 88th minute.

The numbers were closer than the score

  • Possession: Atlético 58%, United 42%.
  • Shots: Atlético 10, United 9; four on target each.
  • Expected goals: Atlético 1.50, United 1.02 (provider figures).
  • Passing: Atlético 579 passes with 509 accurate; United 374 with 313.
  • Corners and fouls: United won 4 corners to Atlético's 2 and committed 13 fouls to 11.

The chance counts suggest United were not overrun: they matched Atlético on shots on target, and the home side's edge was in how much of the ball they kept. That is a measure of control, not of danger. What decided the evening were the two moments that went against United: a goal conceded at the start and a red card at 1-0 down that left ten men chasing a game for the last quarter of an hour.

What it means

United's league-phase record is now a 4-0 win over Sabah and this 2-0 defeat. Their next European match is away at Como on Wednesday 21 October. Before that comes the Premier League visit to Leeds on Sunday 18 October. Carrick's side are coming off a run without a win in five games across all competitions.
