Leeds 1-1 Man United: Mbeumo gives United the lead, Calvert-Lewin levels and the winless run goes on

Mbeumo scored in the 35th minute and Calvert-Lewin equalised in the 51st at Elland Road. Line-ups, the numbers behind the draw, the table and what comes next for United.

Manchester United took a first-half lead at Elland Road on Sunday 18 October but could not hold it, drawing 1-1 with Leeds in Premier League matchweek 7. Bryan Mbeumo scored in the 35th minute, Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled six minutes into the second half, and neither side found a winner. It was United's fourth draw in seven league games and left them without a league win since 30 August.

How the teams lined up

Michael Carrick started with a 4-2-3-1: Lammens in goal; Yoro, Maguire, Martínez and Dalot in defence; Andrey Santos and Baleba in midfield; Diallo, Tielemans and Fernandes behind Mbeumo. Rashford, Cunha, Zirkzee and Mount were among the substitutes. Darren England was the referee.

Farke's Leeds used a back three of Justin, Elvedi and Muharemović in front of Trafford, with Bogle, Ampadu, Tanaka and Gudmundsson across the middle, Stach and Okafor supporting Calvert-Lewin.

First half: United's goal against the run of play

The opening spell was scrappy. Bruno Fernandes was booked for a foul in the 17th minute and Gabriel Gudmundsson followed two minutes later for Leeds. Leeds finished the game with 61% of the ball and took ten of their twelve shots from inside the box, but United found the opener in the 35th minute: Youri Tielemans played the pass and Mbeumo finished. It was Mbeumo's second goal in as many league games, after his goal against Tottenham on 10 October.

At half-time Carrick replaced Lisandro Martínez with Noussair Mazraoui. The match data does not give a reason for the change.

Second half: Calvert-Lewin levels

Leeds equalised in the 51st minute. Tarik Muharemović, a defender, set up Calvert-Lewin, who scored. After that the game settled into a pattern: Leeds with the ball, United looking to break. Both teams changed things in the 74th minute (Nmecha for Okafor for Leeds, and Mount for Baleba for United), Sean Longstaff replaced Ao Tanaka in the 81st, and Matheus Cunha came on for Tielemans in the 84th. Carrick used three of his five substitutions, leaving Rashford and Zirkzee on the bench. The only other bookings came in stoppage time: Ethan Ampadu for Leeds and Andrey Santos for United, cautioned for an argument.

What the numbers say

  • Possession: Leeds 61%, United 39%.
  • Shots: United 13, Leeds 12. But six of United's shots were blocked and seven came from outside the box. Leeds had ten of their twelve inside it.
  • On target: Leeds 5, United 3. Lammens made three saves; Trafford made two.
  • Expected goals: Leeds 1.48, United 0.93 (provider figures).
  • Passing: Leeds completed 445 of 532 (84%); United 266 of 354 (75%).
  • Fouls: Leeds committed 16, United 5. Both sides received two yellow cards.
  • Corners: United 3, Leeds 2.

On the evidence, a draw was a fair result and slightly flattering to the visitors: Leeds created the better chances and had far more of the ball, while United's attacking numbers were inflated by shots from distance that were blocked. United's goal came from one of only six shots they took inside the box.

What it means

United now have seven points from seven league games (one win, four draws, two defeats), with ten goals scored and ten conceded, and sit 13th on our table. Leeds are seventh with ten points. Across all competitions United have now gone six matches without a win since beating Sabah FA on 10 September, and five league matches without one since beating Ipswich on 30 August.

Next up is a Champions League trip to Como on Wednesday 21 October. Back in the league, United host Bournemouth on Sunday 25 October and visit Chelsea on Saturday 31 October.
